Welcome to Chicago!

We've been here since Monday now and I know you guys are dying for an update!  Here's a bit of what we've been up to:

  • Chicago 101: studying maps and learning "the grid system" of how the streets in Chicago are laid out.  And getting to know the CTA (public transportation)

  • Ate Pizza - of course!
  • Lots of tours of lots of neighborhoods.  They are so diverse and interesting - it's like every time you get off the train you're in a different world!
  • Volunteered with a community garden organization that one of my housemates will be working at, picking vegetables and preparing them for a food pantry.
  • Gone to the Jazz Festival in Millennium Park.

  • Cooked our first meal together with my housemates - spaghetti, garlic bread, and broccoli - with ice cream for desert!
  • Learned "Street Smarts"
  • Volunteered in a first grade classroom at the elementary school across the street from our house - a lovely little taste of home!
  • Saw President Obama's house - complete with Secret Service!
  • Talked with JD from the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless about some of the work we are going to be doing with him on our community days.
  • Went to the AWESOME conservatory down the street from where we live - really excited about this place!
